There are founders who build companies, and there are founders who build industries. Meltem Bayazıt Tepeler, founder and president of KM Events, has spent thirty years doing both simultaneously. When she entered the luxury wedding and events space in Turkey in 1995, the sector did not yet exist in any organised sense. What she built in the decades that followed, a company that has hosted heads of state and royalty, designed celebrations for couples from Azerbaijan to India, and executed destination weddings across London, Santorini, Lake Como, Barcelona, and the UAE, is inseparable from the story of how Turkey became one of the world’s most compelling luxury wedding destinations.

Along the way, she founded YEPUD, the only association in Turkey’s event industry, serving as its president from 2007 to 2014, established TUED, the International Events Association of Turkey, in 2019, became a member of the board of directors of ILEA, the International Live Events Association, wrote the only wedding destination book in Turkey, and created and continues to lecture on the Event Management Certificate Program at Bosphorus University. We spoke with her about what thirty years of building a sector from nothing teaches you, why the table is the most powerful storytelling element in any celebration, and what the future of luxury events looks like through the eyes of someone who has been shaping it since before most of the industry arrived.

You have built a strong signature in the luxury wedding space in Turkey. What first drew you to this world, and what made you stay?

What first drew me to the world of luxury weddings was the emotional depth and creativity it allows. I was fascinated by how a single event can bring together design, storytelling, and human connection in such a powerful way.

I actually started in this industry 31 years ago, at a time when this sector was not yet developed in Türkiye. It was a very different landscape, and being part of its growth over the years has been an incredible journey. This has always been my passion.

What made me stay is that every project is unique. Every couple has a different story, and every celebration is a new opportunity to create something meaningful. That constant evolution, combined with my passion for what I do, is what continues to inspire me today.

Your work is often recognised for its attention to detail and refined aesthetic. How would you describe your design language in your own words?

My design language is refined, detail-oriented, and deeply focused on creating a complete experience. For me, it is not just about how a space looks, but how it feels and what it leaves behind.

I do not see design as only decoration. I see it as a combination of emotions, atmosphere, and memory. The experience of the guests and the lasting impression on the couple are just as important as the visual outcome. Everything works together as one whole.

I approach every project with this mindset, staying true to the idea that every detail should contribute to a meaningful and cohesive experience that people will remember long after the event is over.

Tablescapes seem to play a central role in your work. What is it about the table that makes it such a powerful storytelling element in a celebration?

Tablescapes play a central role in my work because the table is where the real connection happens. It is the place where people gather, communicate, share moments, and create memories together. Because of that, it naturally becomes one of the most powerful storytelling elements in any celebration.

For me, a table is not just about decoration. It is about creating a feeling. Every detail, from the textures and colours to the smallest elements, is carefully considered to enhance the overall experience and touch emotions.

In that sense, tablescapes allow us to go beyond visuals and create a deeper connection with guests, turning a simple setting into a meaningful and memorable part of the event.

Your Table Design Exhibition is exceptional and sets you apart in the industry. What inspired you to create an entire platform dedicated to table design, and what were you trying to express through it?

The idea behind creating the Table Design Exhibition came from a desire to elevate table design beyond its traditional boundaries and give it the recognition it truly deserves. I wanted to build a platform where creativity could take centre stage and where table design could be seen as a form of artistic expression, not just a functional element.

From the beginning, the vision was to create a space where designers could communicate their ideas, emotions, and unique perspectives through their designs. It has become a one-of-a-kind platform where participants can fully express themselves through their work, each telling a different story in their own distinctive way.

At the same time, the project was designed with the future of the industry in mind. Through the exhibition and conference elements, it offers inspiration and insight for the younger generation interested in entering the field. And with its B2B component, it creates valuable networking opportunities, bringing together professionals, brands, and emerging talents in one dynamic environment.

Exhibition tables are traditionally about display, but your work turns them into immersive experiences. How do you approach designing a table that goes beyond function and becomes a narrative space?

I approach table design as more than just a visual setup. It is a storytelling platform. Every table should have a concept, a mood, and a narrative that invites people to feel something, not just see it. I start by understanding the story behind the design and then translate that into layers, through materials, colours, textures, lighting, and even the smallest details.

It is about creating an experience where guests can connect with the design on an emotional level. The table becomes a space that reflects an idea, a feeling, or a moment, rather than just serving a functional purpose.

The Table Design Exhibition is one of the few spaces where table design goes beyond function and becomes a form of personal and creative expression, allowing each designer to tell their own story in a very distinctive way.

There is always a gap between what a client imagines and what is possible. How do you manage that conversation while still protecting your creative vision?

There is often a gap between what a client imagines and what is actually possible, and the key is to communicate clearly and honestly. First, I make sure I fully understand their vision, then I guide them on what can realistically be done in the best way.

Instead of saying no, I prefer to offer alternative ideas that keep the original feeling but make it more achievable. This helps the client feel understood while also keeping the project strong.

At the same time, I protect my creative vision by setting clear expectations from the beginning and staying consistent. In the end, it is about finding a balance where both the client’s ideas and the design come together in the best possible way.

Turkish weddings have a unique blend of tradition, elegance, and hospitality. How much of that cultural identity shapes your work, even when designing for international clients?

Turkish weddings have a strong cultural identity, and that naturally influences my work, even when I design for international clients. The hospitality, the attention to detail, and the focus on making every guest feel valued are elements I always carry with me.

It is not about directly applying traditions, but more about adapting that feeling into a refined and universal experience. You can see it in the flow of the event, the atmosphere, and how guests are welcomed and taken care of.

In the end, this mix of elegance, warmth, and cultural depth becomes a subtle signature in everything I create, no matter where the event is held.

Is there a wedding or celebration you consider a personal masterpiece? One that still stays with you?

For me, it is very difficult to choose just one wedding or celebration as a personal masterpiece, because each one holds a special place. Every event is unique, and every couple’s story is different, which makes each experience meaningful in its own way.

What truly stays with me is the feeling of being part of such important moments in people’s lives. Creating their happiest days and leaving them with unforgettable memories is something that brings me a lot of joy.

In that sense, every wedding and celebration becomes unforgettable for me, not just because of the design, but because of the emotions and memories we create together.

You work at a level where detail is everything. What do clients consistently underestimate about that level of precision?

Clients often underestimate how much work goes on behind the scenes to achieve that level of precision. What looks simple and effortless is actually the result of a great deal of planning, coordination, and attention to detail.

Even the smallest elements, like colours, timing, or placement, require careful decisions and constant communication between different teams. A small change can affect the whole flow, so everything needs to be thought through in advance.

It is not just about making things look beautiful, but making everything run smoothly. And that takes considerably more effort than most people expect.

In a world moving toward larger, more immersive celebrations, how do you ensure intimacy is not lost?

Keeping a sense of intimacy is all about thoughtful planning. No matter how large the event is, it is important to make people feel personally connected.

This can be done by creating smaller, cosy moments within the bigger setup, through seating, lighting, music, and personal touches that make guests feel comfortable and included.

At the end of the day, intimacy is not about the size of the event, but about how it feels. When every detail is carefully considered, even the biggest celebration can still feel warm and personal.

Trends in weddings and events are constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead without losing your signature style?

Staying ahead is about finding the right balance between evolution and authenticity. With the experience we have gained over the years, each of us naturally develops a signature style. However, it is not enough to rely solely on that. It is equally important to continuously follow ever-evolving trends and reinterpret them through our own lens.

By blending our signature style with current inspirations, we can add a distinctive touch to every project, ensuring that our work feels both timeless and relevant.

Looking ahead, what does the future of luxury celebrations look like through your lens?

The future of luxury celebrations is becoming more personal and experience-focused. It is not only about design anymore, but about how events make people feel. Every celebration is designed to reflect the personality of the host and create meaningful moments for guests.

There is also a growing focus on creating immersive experiences where design, food, music, and atmosphere all come together in a seamless way. At the same time, being more mindful and sustainable is becoming an important part of luxury, without losing elegance.

In simple terms, true luxury will be about authenticity, thoughtful details, and creating unique experiences that guests will truly remember.
